Tiffney Clarke, the woman who is on trial for the murder of her female lover, opted to give an unsworn testimony before the court yesterday after Justice Navindra Singh overruled a no case submission by her attorney.
Clarke is indicted for the murder of her girlfriend, Sonobia James, almost three years ago, at the Red Dragon night club.
The accused allegedly attacked and stabbed James to the neck with a knife while at the popular night spot. The two women reportedly had a fight over another female at the bar.
Police witnesses who testified at the trial on Wednesday told the court that they do not know the whereabouts of the murder weapon.
Yesterday, Clarke told the court in her defense that James was accidentally stabbed during the altercation. She claimed that the woman “ran into the knife”.
She stood in the prisoners dock and wept as she recounted the series of events leading up to the death of the woman who was her lover.
Clarke claimed that she and James had had several arguments on the night of the murder about going out.
“She forced me to go out; I did not want to… We went to Red Dragon after she get a phone call. She said that she going and meet some girl.”
Clarke claimed that while at Red Dragon James ordered her to sleep with a Brazilian man.
“My girlfriend told me that we needed more money and that there was a Brazilian man inside who looking for a short time and I must go with him. I didn’t want to but she forced me to do it…. When I finish she ask me how much money I get I tell her $5,000 and she took it and put it in her purse.
“We were having a couple of drinks. I was with a girl sitting down and she was talking to another girl and she call me and I went to her and she asked me if my eyes pass she. She push me. I ask she why she do it and we start to fight. She started to beat me up and she hold me by my hair saying you don’t know you done…her purse fell down and the knife she would normally use to cut my skin with, fell out. I reached for the knife. I only wanted to stop her from beating me and she loose me and ask me if I want juk her up and she run towards my belly with her head down and she get bore.”
The accused said that the woman immediately collapsed.
“I start cry and say baby get up and she try to get up and fall down back and somebody say take her to the hospital… I honestly don’t even know how we reach there.”
Meanwhile, Government Pathologist, Dr Nehaul Singh told the court yesterday that the injuries inflicted upon the deceased could have either been accidental, self inflicted or homicidal.
However, the doctor noted that it is now the task of the court to decide on how the injuries were inflicted based on the evidence. The pathologist said that the woman died as a result of hemorrhage due to an eight centimeter wound to her neck.
“Anyone could have inflicted a fatal wound to the neck because that area is made of a lot of soft tissue…even a little child could have inflicted that wound.”
Clarke is being represented by George Thomas. The case is expected to conclude on Monday.
