Traffic congestion at one of the busiest parts of the city is expected to start easing from Monday with new measures to be taken.
According to the Ministry of Public Works, effective Monday, traffic on Camp Street will be prohibited from turning right into Regent Street.
The lights have been configured to no longer allow right turns as of that day, the Ministry said yesterday.
“Regent Street is not being converted to a one-way street, only that right turns will be restricted from Camp Street into Regent Street. Left turns into Regent Street will continue as before and overall motorists will have more ‘green time’ through the junction,” the Ministry said.
With thousands of vehicles being added to the roads every year, consecutive administrations have been battling to find solutions. Four-lane highways are being built on the East Coast and East Bank of Demerara to ease the situation.
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Public Works said it has been studying the situation in downtown Georgetown. “The data from the study, which included traffic counts and left and right turning movements, were used in traffic software that models and simulates junction movements. The junction analysis revealed that if two right turns and no parking on the eastern side of Camp Street between Robb and Regent were to be restricted, the flow of traffic would be improved significantly and the delays would be reduced by approximately 70 percent (from 94.5 seconds to 31.4 seconds),” the Ministry said.
All traffic light junctions along Camp Street will have to be adjusted and synchronized to keep up with the changes at the Camp and Regent Streets junction.
Road signs, both vertical and horizontal will be installed shortly by the Traffic Signs and Maintenance Department to guide motorists into the appropriate lanes, as they approach the junction.
Several other parts of the city are being studied, including the junction of Lamaha and Albert Streets; Irving and Lamaha Streets; Camp and Lamaha Streets; Vlissengen Road and Sandy Babb Street; and Vlissengen Road and Regent Street.
