Having a never ending love for children having come from a single parent home where his mother took care of five boys and two girls, Hugh Ross Classic Body Building and Fitness Show Guest Poser, IFBB Pro. Jeff ‘Classic’ Beckham fulfilled one of his requests yesterday when he visited the Joshua House Children’s Home, East Street.
Beckham, who was accompanied by National cricketer Christopher Barnwell, wasted no time in interacting with the children from the time he entered the premises. He was stormed as the kids were awe struck to see such a huge individual visiting them and being so friendly.
They were challenged to do some strong arm wrestling with Beckham and while he started with one child the numbers soon increased as the kids were bent on overpowering the strong man and eventually they did.
Next up was pushups, Beckham sought to give them a crash course on how it is done. The kids responded well but then challenged Beckham to match and even surpass them. He enquired of them how much he should do and they agreed it should be 50 without rest.
Beckham took on the challenge and succeeded to the extent that he passed out when he was finished; the excited kids counted him along the way.
Beckham took the opportunity to interact with the kids who prayed for him and the other guests before some goodies were shared out to them, national cricketer Christopher Barnwell assisting in this segment.
A melodious rendition of the song, ‘You are my sunshine’, was done for Beckham who expressed his appreciation, stating that they sounded like a mass choir.
Administrator of Joshua House, Ms. Gladys Accra, who hails from the Dominican Republic, informed that she has been at the helm of Joshua House from 1994 to present and is in charge of sixty (60) children ranging from ages 4 to 18.
Some of the children are attending the Government Technical Institute, Guyana Industrial Training Centre and The Business School. Ms. Accra noted that the institution depends purely on donations from members of the public and institutions to survive pointing out that it is a tough challenge at times but they make it by the grace of God.
Equipped with a library and computer room with six computers, a donation from an overseas family, Joshua House, like any other entity has to take care of its utility bills which are a constant challenge that is taken care of again, by donations.
Many of the kids, in an effort to ensure they are equipped with a solid education, are sent to lessons. Ms. Accra said that there is a group of volunteers that would come and assist the children with reading. Five of the kids also attend swimming classes.
“I want these children to be like any other child in society; we want to put a sense of hope and love in their hearts and to see them achieve the highest possible heights in life.”
Ms. Accra also informed that Spicy Dish has volunteered to assist with cooking classes for the children and this will commence shortly.
