Students of the Government Technical Institute (GTI) showcased their capabilities and achievements in specific fields of technological and vocational skills on Thursday. The event was an Open Day hosted at the school, last Wednesday.
Under the theme, “Transforming technical and vocational education for the 21st century,” the activity was aimed at sensitizing potential technical and vocational students on the prospects of careers in the field.
Assistant Chief Education Officer (Technical), Patrick Chinedu, said that the activity will also help promote Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) as a method of empowering the working capacity of future generations.
“Gone were the days when TVET was considered only for those not academically inclined. Over the years, TVET has been wrongly promoted and I am glad that we are removing the stigma…”
“It is not by chance that a regional strategy for TVET was recently approved. TVET is playing a vital role in promoting workforce development and economical competitiveness.
Chinedu said that TVET should be synonymous with workforce development in every part of the globe. It will equip the workforce with skills and competencies that would allow people to transform Guyana from where it is to where it needs to be in the 21st century.
“TVET is not just about using your hand; it is about using your understanding of science and technology principles to transform things to practical equipment. This will help transform our lives, society and the rest of world.”
Chinedu noted that the industrial private sector has played a pivotal role in the growth and development of TVET.
“Several private sector entities have partnered with the institution to help bring about the success we see here today, as we congratulate companies such as MACORP, GT&T, Starr Computers, Courts and entities like the Guyana Lands and Surveys on their solid support for TVET.
“We want to encourage others especially in the private sector to continue to support TVET as it will be both beneficial to them and students.”
Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, described the event as a timely one since it was hosted on the heels of the presentation of the National budget.
Minister Manickchand noted that much of the money, which was proposed for the Education Ministry during the reading of this year’s Budget, will be used to improve Technical and Vocational Education,”
Some $32B of the National Budget was proposed for Education, the largest sector allocation of the entire fiscal plan.
Minister Manickchand said that the realization of technical institutes in Regions Three, Four, Five, Six and Ten is testimony to Government’s commitment to the sector.
There are also plans in place to establish technical institutes Guyana, especially in hinterland regions, Manickchand said.
She added that development in the education sector is an important factor for the country’s economic growth, and is one of the key elements of alleviating poverty.
She later declared the Open Day exercise open.
