– Riddim Squad, Black Pearl play to a draw
Ever since his emergence on the local football scene dating back to the Edwin ‘Chow’ Sealey Indoor Competition, the diminutive Deon Alfred has always been touted to be a star of the future and this hype was proved correctly against Sunburst Camptown, a team he mesmerised with his skills on Thursday evening, at the Camp Ayanganna ground.
Playing in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Division One League, Pele riding on the back of a brace from Alfred gained full points over Sunburst Camptown, winning by a 2-0 margin.
The young striker opened their account as early as the 8th minute of play after reaching on to the end of a cross from the left flank, evaded two defenders before flashing a shot past the goalkeeper.
It seemed clearly that it would not be Camptown’s night as Jamal Codrington became the recipient of a straight red card for displaying dissent towards the referee, reducing them to ten players.
Pele on the other hand continued to look for opportunities to stretch their advantage with Alfred and company exerting torment on the Camptown backline and had it not been for a few errant finishing, the scoreline could have looked a sorrowful sight for Camptown.
Despite their shortcoming in terms of numbers, Camptown were unfortunate not to get the equaliser when Anthony Sancho’s fierce right-footer from just inside the penalty area forced a brilliant save from Pele custodian Devon Charles.
Pele, after orchestrating several threatening incursions, eventually got their reward through another fine effort from Alfred, who was left unmarked inside the red zone and he calmly finished from a through pass in the 65th minute of play.
Earlier, Riddim Squad and Black Pearl played to a 1-1 draw in Second Division League action with Kester Joseph on target for Riddim Squad in the 32nd minute, while Jason Clarke’s 72nd minute effort levelled the proceedings which stayed that way until the final whistle sounded.
