Three men, Ramesh Chunilall called ‘Davo’, 50; Romeo Singh, 24, called ‘Cojo’; and Yogeshwar Mangar, 18; all of Percy Smith Street, Palmyra Village, East Coast Berbice, have been charged with simple larceny.
The men are accused of stealing two chain slings worth $80,264, property of the Rose Hall Sugar Estate. They were not required to plead to the indictable charge and were granted $60,000 bail each by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus; when they appeared before her on Monday in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court.
According to Prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter, on Thursday March 20, last, at Betsy Ground, East Canje the men allegedly stole the chain slings and were in the process of carrying them away when they were caught.
According to information the police acting on information stopped motor car PFF 7764, a white Toyota AT 170 motor car, around 01:00 hrs on the Adelphi Village Public Road, East Canje with the three accused inside.
A search of the trunk uncovered two bags with the chain slings inside.
The men were arrested and the car owned by Chunilall was impounded.
The men told investigators that they found the slings in the bag while they were finishing. They decided to hide it then organized a sale with Chunilall who usually buys scrap iron.
The men are expected to report to Reliance Police Station each Friday at 18:00hrs, until the conclusion of the matter.
They will have to return to court on April 30.
