Dolphin and Lodge book semi-final places
-Two more matches on today
Queen’s College period of dominance came to a screeching halt when they were booted out of this year’s Milo/Petra Competition Organisation Schools Football Competition after falling to Lodge 3-0 yesterday, at the Georgetown Football Club ground.
The East Georgetown-based Lodge were led to victory through a pair of goals off the boots of Shemar Smith, who netted in the 37th and 69th minutes, while Jarrel Grannum added a solitary goal in the 48th minute.
Charlestown goalkeeper goes airborne in vain to save Dolphin’s Lenroy Forde’s fierce free kick yesterday.
In the opening encounter, Dolphin ended the fairy tale run of Charlestown through goals from Lenroy Forde in the 49th minute and Dequan Matthews (57th)
Played before a small band of football fans, the opening game saw both teams immediately on the offensive and Charlestown had the first real chance to score when Captain Omari James broke free following a well directed pass, but an opposing defender came in the nick of time to make a timely clearance.
Dolphin counter attacked with menace and Job Caesar’s anticipated pass to Matthews was calmly intercepted by Charlestown’s Aroydy Branford.
When the break came no team managed to take the ascendancy and everyone present anticipated a scorching second period.
The two teams did not disappoint as they came out trading blows, before Dolphin won a free kick just outside the penalty area and Smith confidently strode up and unleashed a fierce right-footer into the top right corner of the goal.
It was a moment of magic.
Charlestown though clearly fazed by the setback orchestrated a few incisive runs on their own, but robust defending and the threat of a Dolphin counter attack kept them somewhat hesitant.
Matthews was presented with a gift as he stole an intended clearance by a defender and lashed his effort through the legs of the advancing goalkeeper, one minute from full time.
In the second game, Lodge cruised to a comfortable win over Queen’s College.
Two more quarter final matches are scheduled for today at the same venue.
In the first encounter, defending champions St George’s plays Bishops’ High from 16:00hrs, followed by the Queenstown versus Christ Church matchup at 17:30hrs.
