Despite experiencing terrible treatment including accommodation and meals, Alpha “The Hammer” United FC have qualified for the second round of the Caribbean Football Union Club championships after topping group three in the first round which was held in Jamaica recently. Alpha defeated Trinidad and Tobago champions Defence Force 2-0 on March 21 courtesy of Andrew Murray and Kithson Bain goals before toppling Jamaica winners Harbour View FC 1-0 through a Bain effort.

The locals will now take on Valencia of Haiti in the next round on April 18 and a win will guarantee them a place in the 2014-2015 CONCACAF Champions league. Should Alpha end up on the wrong side of the result in this game, they will have to play the loser of the other match between Waterhouse of Jamaica and Puerto Rico’s Bayamon FC for a berth in the Champions League.
President of the club, Odinga Lumumba, voiced his dissatisfaction at the treatment meted out to his players and staff during their stay in Jamaica. He was speaking at a press conference held at Waterchris Hotel yesterday after the team returned home.
Lumumba said that he has lodged a formal complaint with the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) and will also write CONCACAF and FIFA for reimbursement. “It cost us G$5M to play in the first round, but we intend to ask the Government and corporate Guyana for support,” he added.
He singled out goalkeeper Ronson Williams, Kirk Duckworth, Andrew Murray Jnr, Bain and Gregory Richardson for special mention.
The president informed that if Alpha win the next match against Valencia, they will be crowned Caribbean champions and become the first team from these shores to achieve that feat.
Coach of Alpha United, Wayne Dover said that while there were some outstanding individual performances, it was total a team effort.
In relation to the harsh treatment, Dover said it is being used as a psychological advantage adding that this is the worst he has experienced as a coach and they had to take the players elsewhere for meals.
When quizzed about the upcoming game, Dover said that the objective is to win and qualify for the champion’s league.
