Two years after an alleged burglary, a 49-year-old mason was taken before the city court to face charges for allegedly making off with $1.7M from the house of another man.
Deonauth Samaroo of 45 Railway Road, Kitty was charged with break and enter and larceny before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
According to the police, between September 13 and September 14, 2012, the accused broke into the house of Ryan Braithwaite at Francisco Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, and stole a total of $1,677,000 in items.
These included aircraft tools, 15 pairs of shoes and other electrical equipment. However, when faced with the allegations, Samaroo pleaded not guilty and submitted an application for bail through his lawyer.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant explained that about 21:00 hours on September 13, 2012, the victim secured his house but when he woke up the next morning he noticed the articles missing.
Upon checking, he noticed his back door had been prized open and reported the matter to the police. Subsequent investigations led to Samaroo being arrested and charged for the offence.
Inspector Grant raised no objections to bail being granted, and this was allowed to the tune of $125,000.
Samaroo is scheduled to return to court on April 30.
