A 437-foot long 12,500-ton Europe-based cruise ship, with 350 passengers on board, became the first of its kind to grace Guyana’s shores in 2014.
The MV Minerva, which docked at the Guyana National Shipping Corporation (GNSC)’s Wharf, La Penitence, on Sunday, brought visitors from mainly the Philippines and Ukraine, for two days of activities in Guyana, under its 83-night cruise to the “Grand Faces of South America”.
General Manager of Wilderness Explorers, Teri O’Brien, said that the ship’s passengers visited Arrow Point and Kaieteur Falls in addition conducting tours around the city. O’Brien is said to have organized the initiative.
“The tourists also enjoyed lectures on the indigenous people of Guyana, the Guyanese culture and the Mangrove Project from Annette Arjoon and Dave Martins…After completing its tour here, the vessel is scheduled to leave for Trinidad and Tobago,” she added.
Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Indranauth Haralsingh during a visit to the vessel, met with its Captain, Alex Kudove.
In addition to expressing hope that the cruise ship will come more often to Guyana, Haralsingh also made known the works in the pipeline to address constraints to cruise docking in Guyana. He noted that a feasibility study is underway for a cruise terminal in Port Georgetown.
He explained that Government is moving to address these challenges as cruise arrival is important to Guyana which has a fledgling tourism industry, but one which has seen vast growth and recognition by renowned tour operators and promoters.
Haralsingh noted that over the last 10 years, visitor arrivals have been increasing significantly to ‘Destination Guyana’, and in 2013, it was one of three countries in the Caribbean to record double-digit growth with an 11.7 percent increase.
The increase, he said, represents visitors from across the Caribbean, especially Jamaica, and including Suriname and Brazil. This is a result of several initiatives undertaken by the Ministry of Tourism, along with the GTA, including familiarization trips, British Birdwatchers’ Fair in London, and Trade Shows in New York and Canada.
