Western Tigers clawed back from a 1 nil deficit to inflict a 4-1 beating on Houston Stars in the lone encounter of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Division Two league match at the Guyana Defence Force, Camp Ayangana ground, Sunday afternoon last.
The game commenced at a frenetic pace with the energetic Houston Stars team formulating clever passes. Their goal came as no surprise as their front man, Eon Hunter struck in the 9th minute to send his team ahead. The Tigers responded shortly afterwards when Joshua Britton was fouled in the box and duly converted from the penalty spot.
Houston Stars should have reasserted itself to the ascendency after being awarded a penalty but Joe Garrett botched the chance with a poorly timed kick which the Western Tigers custodian effortlessly scooped up. Shortly afterwards, the players went in for the intermission.
When the battle resumed, both teams attacked with venom but an especially clever bit of ball weaving by Darren Benjamin, who sped down the centre of the field and pasted the Houston Stars custodian with a fierce right foot shot that sped past his outstretched hands and settled in the network.
A determined Houston Stars responded almost immediately when Clairmonte Welch launched an enterprising solo run but botched the chance with a tame strike into the hands of the Western Tigers custodian. Fate was on the Houston Stars side and they were offered yet another opportunity to equalize the situation when the Western Tigers goalie handled the ball outside the box. He made some reparations after averting a goal from the ensuing indirect free kick.
It was around that time that the ‘Tigers’ awoke from their lethargy with Wayne Wilson sprinting down the centre to net his team’s third goal thus pushing victory a bit further from the East Bank team. They were still recovering from that strike when Randolph Wagner added salt to the wound with a humdinger that sped past the outstretched hands of their custodian. The Western Tigers team appeared to be fired up and ready to inflict grievous bodily harm but the final whistle saved their opponents from further misery.
