…Town Clerk, Councilors walk out
Yesterday’s statutory meeting at City Hall ended prematurely when Mayor Hamilton Greene and members of the Council walked out after Town Clerk Carol Sooba and City Engineer Colvern Venture refused to answer “basic” questions forwarded by councilors.
The councilors accused the Town Clerk of refusing to allow the administrative officer to answer “basic” questions relating to some buildings around the city.
Mayor Greene suspended the meeting after councilors, including those of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), expressed dissatisfaction towards the actions of the Town Clerk and her staff. They were especially peeved when she told the councilors that the questions they wanted answered should be put into writing. The councilors were asking questions pertaining to issues in the Council’s agenda which was up for consideration.
One question which was asked by the Mayor referred to the City Engineer meeting deadlines as was mentioned in his report, but the Engineer sat without acknowledging that a question was being asked. The Town Clerk was fingered for not demanding that the staff respond to the Mayor.
Another question which was put forward by Councilor Kamla Davi-Ross related to what requirements were necessary for persons desirous of opening liquor outlets and restaurants. The Engineer again responded in the same manner.
Councilor Glaston George expressed grave concern over the danger posed by a leaning building located on Mandela Avenue and D’Urban Street, calling it a “life and death situation”. When the Town Clerk advised that the questions asked by the Councilors should be put into writing, they (the councilors) erupted in disagreement.
They pointed out that they were elected to not only ensure the well being of the city but that of its citizens. They slammed the Town Clerk for recommending written submissions when “basic” questions on current matters of welfare were being asked.
Mayor Greene subsequently suspended the meeting and walked out with the Councilors. Sooba’s attempt to call back the Councilors proved futile.
The Mayor has repeatedly accused the Town Clerk of “rude and unprofessional” behaviour. He described yesterday’s action as “ludicrous”.
