DEAR EDITOR,
There is an interesting story making the rounds in which former United States President Jimmy Carter is reported to have said that he believed that United States intelligence agencies are spying on him.
“You know, I have felt that my own communications are probably monitored” President Carter reportedly said in an interview with NBC. “And when I want to communicate with a foreign leader privately, I type or write a letter myself, put it in the post office and mail it.”
These are indeed strong statements coming from a former President of the United States, especially against the backdrop of two world leaders who expressed their displeasure over the extent to which private conversations with other world leaders were secretly monitored by US intelligence.
It would be recalled that Mrs Angela Merkel, German Chancellor and Brazilian President Dilma Rouseff have both protested against undue surveillance of private conversations by US spying agencies.
Former President Jimmy Carter is known for his advocacy of democratic elections throughout the world and was highly instrumental in the restoration of democracy to Guyana on October 5 1992 after twenty-eight years of dictatorial rule.
