Three witnesses have given sworn testimonies in the trial of Tiffney Clarke, called ‘Tiffany’, who has been indicted for the murder of her female lover, Sonobia James.
Clarke, a resident of Albouytstown, is facing Georgetown Supreme Court Judge Navindra Singh and a mixed twelve-member panel of jurors for the crime, which occurred between February 25, and February 26, 2011.
According details of the case, the accused and her lover were at Red Dragon night club, when Clarke saw James talking to another woman. The accused apparently became jealous and approached her.
An argument ensued and Clarke allegedly took out a knife and stabbed her lover to the neck. James fell to the ground and was subsequently rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she died upon arrival.
Hospital personnel then contacted law enforcement officers who apprehended the accused, as she waited outside the Accident and Emergency Unit of GPHC.
During a preliminary hearing prior to the trial, Clarke’s Attorney, George Thomas, had alleged that his client had suffered years of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of the victim.
Thomas told the court that Clarke’s scars bear testimony to her situation. Thomas claimed on the night of the incident, his client as customary was under attack by her lover, when she (the victim) received her injuries.
When the case came up in the High Court, last Wednesday, Thomas advised his client to remove her blouse in the dock to show scars on her arms.
However the Prosecution, which is represented by Attorney -at- law Dhanika Singh, claimed that the accused stabbed the victim in the neck, causing her death.
Clarke has since pleaded not guilty to the offence before the Judge and jury.
Police witness, Melissa Gilkes, who was the arresting officer on the night of the murder, and a taxi driver, who transported the accused and her injured lover to the Georgetown Public Hospital, have since given sworn evidence in the trial.
The matter will continue today.
