The female rank of the Guyana Defence Force accused of murdering a 55-year-old housewife in Agricola in January was warned not to make any contact with the victim’s family at yesterday’s sitting of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Abiola Jacobs, 22, is charged with the murder of Donna Taylor who was found with her hands bound behind her back, a slit throat, and a piece of cloth wrapped around her neck.
She was first brought before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on February 5 where she was indicted for the capital offence. Jacobs is being prosecuted by Inspector Michael Grant.
Yesterday’s hearing was the third court appearance for Jacobs. The Prosecution said that investigations are complete and that it will be presenting 17 witnesses.
Grant informed the court that Jacobs had been contacting family members of the victim via phone calls and letters and as such beseeched the Chief Magistrate to warn Jacobs to refrain from contacting them.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry, in response, asked Defence Attorney Adrian Thompson to advice his client to desist from doing so.
Jacobs was further remanded to prison and the Preliminary Inquiry was set to commence on May 6.
Jacobs was charged five days after Taylor’s bounded body was found at the back of her Lot 16-17 Agricola home minutes to midnight on January 31.
The mother of four was said to have been attacked in her bed around 23:00 hrs on Friday January 31, and slain after which her body was dragged to her backyard.
The other occupant of the rented upper flat, Samantha Sabat, was subsequently found lying unconscious in the front yard.
The British-based citizen was a guest of the Taylors. She reportedly escaped by removing the panes from her bedroom window and jumping to the ground from the top flat of the two-storey structure.
Sabat was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for a suspected fractured arm and lacerations to her face and other parts of her body.
A neighbour and the victim’s son found Taylor’s body, with hands bound behind her back in her backyard. A post mortem later conducted showed that she suffered blunt trauma to the head, as well as injuries to the neck and other parts of the body.
Death was due to shock and hemorrhage.
The army rank, who was the girlfriend of one of Taylor’s sons, was apprehended after Sabat, who survived the attack, fingered her as one of the individuals who forced their way into the residence and launched an attack on them.
