As the American University of Research continues its mission to address the worrying issue of suicide, Ms Alana Seebarran, Miss India Guyana and Miss India World 2012, was last week appointed Ambassador for the university’s Suicide Prevention and Self Awareness Mission which commenced last February.
Seebarran will act as spokesperson for Suicide Prevention and Self-Awareness with youth, and participate in fundraising activities and accept donations for the mission on behalf of the university.
She will also create links with suicide prevention and other interested organizations. The decision to appoint Ms. Seebarran stemmed from the positivity she has portrayed in representing Guyana locally and internationally.
“Ms. Seebarran dedicates herself to the practice of sharing knowledge, and encouraging World Peace – this is a dedication which we believe will have a great impact on our mission since one of our roles not only entails research but also sharing knowledge on suicide prevention and self-awareness.”
In addition, Ms. Seebarran is also presently a part of the Ms. World Organization in their sensitization on bullying and suicide. The international beauty was presented with a certificate of Ambassadorship by the university.
“The team of American University of Research is extremely honoured to appoint Ms. Alana Seebarran Miss India World 2012 as Ambassador for our Suicide Prevention and Self Awareness Mission.”
Dr. Eton Simon, Psychologist and President of the organization, had told Kaieteur News about growing concerns over suicide occurrences.
The university has recently completed research on the Essequibo Coast and found over 100 suicide attempts for last year, with 16 deaths.
Residents there expressed concerns that enough was not being done to fight the issue. They opined that domestic issues were the leading cause of suicides and recommended new programs to tackle the issue.
Dr. Eton said that the university was committed to addressing the matter, so much so that by month end, potential suicide victims would be able to access real counselors on their cell phones, while in time to come, a special suicide website will be up and running so that victims could hear the testimonies of persons who have attempted suicide and from the family members of persons who have committed the act.
The university is scheduled to conduct research in several communities. Activities are scheduled for Berbice within a few days.
