Government has made approaches to India to build a ferry to replace the MV Kimbia, which plies the Northwest District. This would require some improvements to the Northwest wharf and cargo storage capacity.
This is according to Transport Minister, Robeson Benn during a recent interview with this publication. He enlightened that the new ferry would be bigger than the MV Kimbia, and critically, is expected to be faster.
“So instead of taking 24 hours or more to get from Georgetown to the Northwest either at Kumaka or Morawhanna, we are expecting to cut the time…So Transport and Harbours Department could undertake more journeys,” he said.
Government is also planning to introduce a new ferry for the Parika to Bartica route. This is expected to be introduced by 2016. In the interim, the MV Makouria and MV Malali would continue to ply the route.
Benn related that the Ministry of Public Works would have to execute modifications to the existing Bartica Ferry Stelling also to accommodate the roll-on roll-off ferry. The Minister assured that his Ministry would undertake this project so as not to “throw the blame around if something goes wrong.”
Nonetheless, Benn is not expecting anything to go wrong in the design and building stages since the Public Works Ministry is determined not to repeat mistakes from previous projects. One such project is the Supenaam Ferry Stelling that was built by BK International, executed by the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development and handed over to the Public Works Ministry.
In 2009 the Supenaam ferry Stelling became operational and since then, numerous repairs had to be conducted on $600M-plus project. The stelling was built to accommodate the MV Sabanto and MV Kanawan.
