APNU Parliamentarian, Renis Morian, recently presented the young residents of Coomacka with footballs, DVDs and packets of hair care products.
The objective behind the initiative, Morian said, was to offer support for all ages, including the girls in the community.
Morian said, “Today we are responding to the cry of our youths in the Coomacka area of Region Ten. One needs to note that $100 million was approved under the Ministry of Youth and Sports, yet here at Coomacka, youths don’t have the necessary facilities for sports and development.
Article 31 of UNICEF convention of 1989 supports play and recreational activities and facilities as rights of children and youths without discrimination, yet our Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture is selective as the youths in Region Ten continue to lament the need for these said facilities .
“Today APNU is pleased to support our indigenous peoples and our youths hence in our support on behalf of David Granger the Opposition Leader, we present the items in support of our youths. We continue to lament the disrespect and definite efforts by this administration to stifle development and independence of indigenous peoples.”
After the presentations, residents vented their frustration about certain facilities that are lacking in the community.
There is no potable water, they pointed out. “In these enlightened times residents are relegated to drinking water from the river, while there are known gold and other works being carried out at the upper reaches of the river.”
Morian told the residents that this is in contravention of the United Nations resolution 64/292 of July 28, 2010.
“While the government and kleptocrats continue to binge on the people’s capital, our indigenous residents cry out for a better deal and for the Government to honour the UN convention on water.”
The other issue highlighted was the perceived discriminatory and divisive practices being perpetuated by members of the PPP in the community.
According to reports, contract works were done in the community to clear drains and it was agreed that first preference would go to single mothers and unemployed males. That did not happen, disgruntled residents said, but instead known PPP supporters who are employed elsewhere, were allowed to do the work.
Residents spoke of the need for employment, especially among the youths. They cried out for better roads and a police outpost supported by an emergency vehicle.
They also made appeals to GT&T for telephone service to the area. “I call on the Government to use its leverage on behalf of the people of Coomacka.
“We of APNU will continue to lend our voices and offer support to all indigenous peoples of Guyana. All Guyanese are entitled to a good life.
“Our Government, after two decades, seems incapable of providing a good life for all. We continue to believe, pray and agitate for change. God is able, this is our belief,” Morian declared.
