Top Caribbean marksman Lennox Braithwaite continued his fine form ahead of this year’s West Indies Fullbore Shooting Championships set for reggae Island, Jamaica in early April with another victory when the Guyana National Rifle Association held another Recorded Shoot on Sunday last at the Timehri Rifle Ranges.
Conditions were overcast early at the 300 yards range with unusually strong winds but these conditions did not pose any challenges for Braithwaite who saw the targets with such clarity that he shot and won this range with a possible of 50 points while hitting the V on four (4) occasions.
National Fullbore Vice Captain Dylan Fields placed second with 49 points and 5 V-Bulls. Braithwaite achieved another possible at the 600 yards range (35.5) to win ahead of Ransford Goodluck with 34.1.
The 1000 yards range saw National Fullbore Captain Mahendra Persaud shooting his way to victory with a score of 32.2. However, both Mahendra Persaud and Dylan Fields developed technical problems with their rifles and were unable to complete the full three ranges.
The Overall Shoot saw Braithwaite emerging as the top shot with 116.10, followed by Goodluck with 113.8. Leading his rivals in the ‘O’ Class was Leo Ramalho who won at 300 and 500 yards respectively tallying scores of 48.1 and 34.2 respectively.
Sherwin Felicien was second at the 300 yards with 46.1 but won the 1000 yards with 27.0. National Wind Coach Paul Slowe, who returned home recently, took the second place at 600 yards with 33.2. Ramalho emerged as the winner of the ‘O’ Class category.
Having done extensive work at the individual shoots, attention will now turn to Team Shoots from this weekend in preparation for the West Indies Fullbore Championships.
GNRA Secretary Ryan Sampson has stated that letters have been sent out to the business community and he is hopeful that companies will respond positively as they have done in the past.
Sampson also stated that the sport is not one to attract attendance hence funds cannot be raised in that manner noting that the excellent performances of the Guyana NRA team over the years speaks for itself.
Guyana has won both the Short and Long Range Team Championships more than any other West Indies Rifle Team.
“We have made all Guyana proud with our performances; therefore we need assistance to make Guyana proud once more.” Sampson noted.
