Rising the decking of the shaded section of the Parika Ferry Stelling, East Bank Essequibo, is imminent, since the structure and surroundings experienced flooding in January last during the spring tide period.
Apparently, during the spring tide, reportedly the highest in the area in over four years, water seeped through the spaces on the timber decking.
It is unknown when works will commence on the stelling but in the interim, the Ministry of Public Works will be executing temporary works to prevent floodwater getting into the market, on the roadway and the Parika Police Station’s compound.
Next to the stelling is a beach area, which borders the police station and has a drain that added to the area being flooded. As such, the Ministry will be building an 18-inch high slope between the stelling and the road. This slope would connect to the station’s concrete fence.
In addition, the Ministry will be placing flap gates to the drains inside the market. The market’s drainage system is ineffective during rainy conditions. However, observers believe that the Ministry should aggressively rise the decking because there is no certainty that the water would not overtop the slope.
