Young Warriors Cricket Club clinched a 43 run victory over Number 71 Cricket Club of Upper Corentyne when the finals of the 2013 Berbice Cricket Board (BCB)/ New Building Society Limited (NBS) Second Division 40 overs cricket competition concluded at the Cumberland Playfield, East Canje Sunday afternoon last.
Young Warriors won the toss, opted for first strike and amassed a formidable 277-5 in their allotted overs. Mortimer Fraser and all-rounder, Kevin Ramdeen opened the batting and compiled 31before Ramdeen was dismissed for 10.
Ishwar Singh joined Fraser and together they put together a partnership of 43 before Fraser went, caught off Khemraj Roopraj for 42. Sanjay Khan joined Fraser and the pair added a further 43 runs before the latter batsman was dismissed, caught off Khemraj Roopraj for a polished 42 runs with the score on 120-3.
Rudolph Baker then joined Singh and together they destroyed the opposition’s bowling attack, scoring 114 in 14 overs to take the score to 234 for 3 before both batsmen fell in quick succession; Singh for a top score of 84 (3×4 1×6) and Baker, a quick fire 68 (7×4 5×6). Thereafter, Anil Beharry and Kassim Khan notched up 27 runs off the last 8 deliveries to see their team to their eventual total. Beharry scored 28 (3×6) while Khan scored 9. Khemraj Sugrim picked up 2 wickets for Number 71.
Needing to score at around 7 runs per over, No 71 lost their first two wickets with the score on 43 in the 8th over due to incisive bowling by Berbice Under-17-left arm medium pacer Kassim Khan.
Andrew Seamber (40) and Nazim Mohamed (35) then steadied the innings somewhat before Seamber fell to off spinner Ramdeen Khemraj without adding to his score. Khemraj Sugrim joined Mohamed and together they put on a further 40 runs for the fifth wicket before Mohamed departed at 157 for 4.
Skipper Manouram Vincent came to the crease and gave his team some hope with an enterprising 55 (2×4 3×6) but his efforts dwindled to naught as he had little support from the lower order and the innings folded at 234 for 9 with Vincent remaining unbeaten.
Sanjay Khan dominated the bowling averages for Young Warriors with 3 wickets with support from Kassim Khan and veteran Hubern Evans who supported with two scalps apiece.
Meanwhile, BCB Vice President, Hubern Evans, presided over the presentation ceremony and praised the sponsors and organizers for an excellent job. He noted that the competition is of utmost importance, not only for the development of cricket in Berbice but also the lives of its residents.
Senior Manager of NBS (Berbice), Anil Beharry, expressed pleasure for the organizational input even as he noted that over 100 teams had participated. He said that this is the single largest cricket competition in the Caribbean and reiterated his pleasure at supporting the communities in which they operate.
Mr. Beharry said that constant competition helps to keep the village grounds in good order so that people can exercise and live a healthy lifestyle even as it provides activity for members of the first division clubs. He also committed to continued support when the 2014 competition is launched within the next two weeks.
Young Warriors carted off the first place winnings of $60,000 and a trophy while Number 71 pocketed $30,000.00. Ishwar Singh was adjudged man-of-the-match and best batsman while Sanjay Khan was voted best bowler. Several cash incentives were given for outstanding performances in the preliminary rounds including a special prize to Soomdat Singh for being the only batsman to score in excess of 500 runs in the competition.
