A 33-year-old contractor was yesterday shot and robbed of $537,000 by two gunmen on a CG motorbike around 13:00hrs. The robbery took place on the roadway at Providence, in the vicinity of the Princess International Hotel, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Minutes before, Shane James had left a banking facility located in a section of the hotel.
James of Bagotville, West Bank Demerara was shot to the abdomen. He is now hospitalised in a stable condition at a private hospital.
Police in a statement said that about 13:00hrs yesterday, James was awaiting transportation on the roadway at Providence when two men on a motor cycle, one of whom was armed with a firearm, confronted him.
The release further added that the armed man shot the father of two and took away his bag with money before escaping.
Yesterday at the hospital, James, who does contract jobs for Noble House Seafoods Limited on the EBD said that he had just walked out of the bank and was on the roadway, waiting to stop a taxi when two men rode up to him, grabbed his bag and shot him.
“I’m a contractor. I supply labour force to Noble House Seafoods. So I went to the bank to get money to pay my workers. I was supposed to pay them tomorrow (today),” the father of two said.
He added that after he was shot, he collapsed and the men escaped. He was rushed to the hospital by a police patrol vehicle.
Meanwhile, a Police Constable is now hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) nursing a gunshot wound to his right foot after being accidently shot by another rank.
In a release, police said that around 07:45 hrs yesterday Constable Samuel Elvis was shot after a round was discharged by another rank while clearing his firearm at Police Headquarters.
Investigations into both incidents are in progress.
