Quick and intense action by investigators from the Guyana Police and Defence Forces led to the recovery early yesterday morning of a 9mm pistol that was stolen from a member of the GDF Intelligence Unit on Wednesday night.
The firearm was found stashed in a bag in an alleyway at ‘B’ Field, Sophia, around 07:45 hours, after the ranks were led there by the suspect, a fisherman, who was apprehended a few hours earlier.
Kaieteur News understands that the soldier had confronted the suspect at Better Hope on the East Coast of Demerara, on Wednesday night, while the man was assaulting his reputed wife.
It was then that he was attacked and relieved of his gun.
According to a source, the woman had moved out of the suspect’s home and this angered him so much when he returned from sea that he tracked her down to Better Hope. While talking to the woman, the suspect suddenly became violent and started to beat her while dragging her through the street.
The soldier was heading to his home when he saw the incident and since he was armed with a 9mm pistol, he challenged the suspect to let the woman go.
But although the soldier was brandishing his gun, the suspect, who was armed with a piece of wood, managed to lash him to the head, rendering him semi-conscious.
The suspect then relieved the soldier of his gun and made good his escape, leaving the rank lying on the roadway.
When he came to, the army rank reported the matter and a manhunt was launched for the fisherman.
From all indications the man was hoping to depart for sea before those on the hunt could locate him.
After searching the entire Wednesday without success, investigators staked out the Meadowbank Wharf where they later apprehended the man as he was attempting to board a vessel which was leaving for a fishing voyage.
Under intense questioning, the man led the investigators to an alleyway in ‘B’ Field, Sophia, near his home, where he had stashed the gun.
This newspaper was reliably informed that the suspect was held by police earlier on Wednesday for threats he made to his estranged wife, but was subsequently released.
He is expected to face charges stemming from his actions.
