A 23-year-old Brazilian national was yesterday brought before the courts and indicted for stealing a motorbike and trafficking marijuana in Saint Ignatius, Region Nine, four days ago.
Cleverson Santos DaSilva appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was arraigned on simple larceny and possession of narcotic for the purpose of trafficking charges.
According to the police, the misdemeanours were committed in the village last Saturday (March 15).
They claimed that on that day he had in his possession 220.7 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. It is alleged too that he stole a $120,000 motorbike, property of Howard Williams.
When the charges were read to him, he pleaded not guilty, but the court presided over by Magistrate Faith McGusty refused bail and ordered him held until his next court hearing on April 7.
According to Corporal Seon Blackman, who prosecuted, DaSilva was reportedly found after the Deputy Toshao, a member of the community policing group, noticed him acting suspiciously and called in the Port Kaituma Police Station for assistance.
The police ranks then ventured to Buru Creek where they found him with the said stolen motorcycle as well as one black plastic bag wrapped with brown scotch tape, the Prosecutor said.
Corporal Blackman related that when the black plastic bag was checked, a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis sativa was concealed therein. He indicated that DaSilva was then escorted to the Port Kaituma Police Station where the cannabis was weighed and sealed in his presence. Subsequent investigations led to him being charged with the offences.
The Prosecutor, in his objections to bail, cited Section 94 of the Narcotics Act, which specifies that in order for bail to be granted to any accused, special reasons in relation to the offence and not the offender must be presented to the court.
Corporal Blackman also cited the nature of the offence and the punishment it attracts as grounds for bail to be refused.
The Prosecutor opined that if DaSilva is granted pre-trial liberty he would not return to face his charges since he is a Brazilian with no permanent ties in Guyana.
The case is scheduled to be called before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the said court.
