Vishnu Talechandra stroked six sixes and five fours in a top score of 71 as Wolf’s Warriors defeated Speed Boat XI by nine wickets to claim the Wolf’s 59th birth anniversary 12 overs softball tournament yesterday at GNIC ground.
Chasing 134 for victory, Wolf’s Warriors from the West Coast of Demerara reached their target in 9.3 overs. Talechandra and Ricardo Adams put their team on course with an opening stand of 120 before Adams was dismissed for 47 with four sixes and three fours. Amrit Rai was not out on six when victory was achieved.

Earlier, Speed Boat XI, who drew the bye to the final, batted first and was guided to 133-6 off their allotted 12 overs mainly through Shazim Karim who scored 52 and Narine George 24. Narine Bailey grabbed 2-18 for the winners. Bailey received the best bowler award and Talechandra the most outstanding batsman prize. Wolf’s Warriors pocketed a trophy and $130,000.
Wolf’s Warriors overcame Memorex of Berbice by two wickets in the lone semifinal contested earlier. Memorex batted first and scored 102-8 in 12 overs with Roy Jafferally getting 39; Bailey and Diaram Persaud captured two wickets each. Wolf’s Warriors encountered some nervous moments before they eventually won the game in nine overs ending on 103-8. Azad Azeez led with 42 not out; Andrew Percival took 2-11.
Frontline Rangers beat Super Star by five runs in the Over-40 final. Frontline Rangers took first strike and posted 156-4 off their allocation of 15 overs. Mohamed Rafeek slammed 69 and Mahendra Arjune 31.
Super Star were bowled out for 151 in 15 overs in reply. Jagdesh Persaud scored 41 and Sunil Khan chipped in with 29 as Michael Safie snared 3-22, Asif Safie 2-14, Mohamed Rafeek 2-34 and Rudy Rodrigues 2-34.
Rafeek Alli took the best bowler prize and Mohamed Safie the best batsman trophy. Frontline collected a trophy. The competition was sponsored by Imran Hussain of Wolf’s Furniture store of Leonora, West Coast Demerara. (Zaheer Mohamed)
