Barbados based Guyanese boxer, Revlon Lake, is bristling with confidence as he prepares to enter the ring in a highly anticipated slugfest against Jamaican, Sakima Mullings at the Chinese Benevolent Centre, Jamaica when the Jamaica Boxing Board presents the second segment of the Contender Series tomorrow evening. Lake has been categorized in the yellow team’ while Mullings is placed in the Green Team.
The tournament is being promoted by Wray and Nephew Contender and enters its fourth season; organizers have added a new twist and a Caribbean flavour to the boxing competition where the Green Team will comprise Jamaican boxers who will go up against the Yellow Team, which consists of boxers from the wider Caribbean, Guyana, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago.
A total of eight Jamaican boxers including Mullings, Tsetsi ‘Lights Out’ Davis and Donovan ‘Police’ Campbell, under coach Carl Grant will do battle against Team Caribbean trained by Andrew Boland.
The boxers will be competing for a share of J$3 million in prize money, with the winner of the Wray & Nephew Contender walking away with J$2 million and the title of Jamaica’s Ultimate Welterweight Boxer. The runner-up will receive J$500,000, third place will receive J$250,000 and fourth place, J$200,000.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur Sport spoke with Lake yesterday afternoon and he said that he is ready for the bout. He said that the Guyanese contingent is currently residing in Cherry Gardens, Kingston and conducts training sessions at the Browing Gym. “I am in good condition and ready to take on Mullings,” pronounced Lake.
Lake is one of four local boxers that have travelled to Jamaica just over a week ago to participate in the tournament. The local team also consists of Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman, Gladwin Dorway and Derick Richmond, accompanied by local coaches, Joseph Murray, Mark Thom and Orlan ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers. Eon Jardine has also accompanied the team in the capacity of referee/judge.
The team remains in the Island for approximately four months and will engage their counterparts of the host country, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados. Once a fighter loses, he will be ejected from the tournament but during their stay in Jamaica, will receive a weekly stipend to sustain them while all related expenses will be offset by the promoters. The remaining boxers on the Guyanese entourage continue training and will be in action soon.
The other members of the Jamaican team are Kevin ‘Bus Boy’ Hylton, Ramel ‘Sub Zero’ Lewis, Richard ‘Frog’ Holmes, Derrick ‘Guts’ Spencer and Glenroy ‘Bumpy’ Beckford.
Team Caribbean (Yellow) – Coach Andrew Boland: Gardel ‘The Judge’ Roberts (Guyana), Prince-Lee Isidore (Trinidad), Lake (Guyana), Christopher ‘Shaka’ Henry (Barbados), Derick ‘Dangerous’ Richmond (Guyana), Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman (Guyana), Gladwin ‘Tiger’ Dorway (Guyana) and Anthony Osborne (Jamaica).
