Cognizant that a healthy police force is important to effective crime fighting efforts, the Guyana Police Force’s Association last week hosted a health fair.
The event was held as part of the Association’s 63rd anniversary celebrations, which began on March 3 with a prayer service and is expected to conclude on March 29 with an Oldies Dance.
According to Amanda Hermanstein, Chairperson of the Police Force Association, this is the first year the Association is hosting the fair and hopes it could become an annual feature. The Association believes that owing to the busy work schedule of ranks, their health is put on the back burner and this should not be.
The 13 organizations including the Ministry of Health, Guyana Defence Force and the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association participated in the health fair. They highlighted several aspects of human health including oral hygiene, sexual reproductive health, vision health, nutrition, blood donation and tuberculosis.
Hermanstein said that a number of ranks are overweight and need to prioritize their health. The event is hoped to motivate them to get into the healthy lifestyle of exercise, consuming a proper diet and regular medical check-ups.
She added that on March 23 the Association will continue its health awareness campaign through a fitness walk. The walk will begin at the East La Penitence Police Station and culminate at the Police Sports Club.
The Chairperson is hopeful that the walk would be just as overwhelming as the health fair. Members of the public, including school children and ranks have been visiting the various booths.
