A sea of national colours filled the National Park yesterday, as colorfully dressed relatives of the Thompson family held its first annual Family Reunion and Fun Day. The event which attracted some 300 odd family members were well supported by family members, which came from across Guyana decked out in the country’s national colours.
According to one of the organizers, Desiree ‘Baby’ Nurse, the family members used the event to familiarize themselves with other relatives while engaging in a number of sporting events, which according to Nurse is geared at bringing out their athletic skills and abilities.
Nurse said that it also afforded them to enjoy the sights and sounds of the diverse culture of the Guyanese people while showcasing the family and united skills and culture of the family members who turned out in their numbers.
The event, which according to Nurse will be an annual event, got into full swing with a two children’s race, while the young lady’s race was win by Keisha Thornton with Benjamin Nicholas taking the male version in fine style. Both races produced electrifying results with Thornton winning comfortably and Benjamin edging his cousin Ryan Nicholas in a close finish.
Several other sporting events were contested among them including two major cricket matches which consisted of a 10/10 and a six over tapeball match which was keenly contested by a numbers of relatives.
Fueled by sentimentality, the family members also engaged in a football match, lime and spoon races and a Plus size race for women. In the first match the older Thompson’s generation was bowled out for a meager 14 in 4.5 overs in the 6 over affair, while the runs were easily knocked off in 3.2 overs from the younger Thompson’s generation.
Nurse who expressed satisfaction with the turn out and urged all in attendance to ensure that for next year’s event the turnout would be much greater stating that it’s imperative that they remain in touch and knowledgeable with each other. “As we continue to grow older it’s important that as we get more children that we keep them aware of what and who they need to know within the family,” she reiterated.
The Thompsons represents off springs from Benjamin Thompson who was originally from Suriname but migrated to Guyana.
