A Fiercely contested and pulsating game interspersed with exhilarating no holds barred bone crunching tackles and brilliant passing by both team’s packs and quick counter attacking moves from the full backs (Leon Greaves of Hornets and Joseph Rahaman of GDF) kept a small but appreciative group of spectators and team supporters on tenterhooks down to the wire when GDF clashed with Pepsi Hornets in yesterday’s highly hyped match in the ongoing Bounty Farm First Division 15’s league.
The fierceness of the encounter kept Referee Alwin Etwah on his toes as he did a brilliant job of controlling a game that threatened to get out of control at times. When the final whistle sounded and the dust had cleared, GDF to their relief ran out winners against a determined and hard finishing Pepsi Hornets 33 -22.
GDF started the game at a fast clip not allowing the Pepsi Hornets time to settle in, putting two consecutive tries on the scoreboard in the 4th (Alfred Sargeant) and 11th (Patrick King) minutes of the game, both converted by Clive Prowell before Pepsi Hornets retaliated with one (Blaize Bailey) in 21st minute stinging the Army boys into responding with another three quick tries (Avery Corbin, Jermaine Jacobs and Revon Williams; with two out of three conversions by Clive Prowell) in the 26th , 28th and 31st minutes.
On the resumption, a totally galvanized and resurgent Pepsi Hornets led by Captain Ryan George and Veterans Peter Campayne and Kenneth Grant Stuart, who suffered an eye cut, launched an all-out counterattack on the GDF Citadel with resulting tries by powerful forward Delroy Gordon (2) in the 69th and 79th minutes along with the ever hustling Ryan George (1 try and a conversion) in the dying minutes of the game, were not good enough to create an upset.
SUMMARY
GDF – 5 tries (Alfred Sargeant 1, Patrick King 1, Avery Corbin 1, Jermaine Jacobs 1 and Revon Williams 1) and 4 conversions (Prowell 4 out of 5).
Pepsi Hornets – 4 tries (Blaize Bailey 1, Delroy Gordon 2, and Ryan George 1 with 1 conversion).
The GRFU Selection committee is expected to meet during this week to shortlist the Senior National Players for the upcoming NACRA 15’s Championship game against Barbados on May 17th in Barbados.
NEXT WEEK’S MATCHES
Next weekend’s matches herald the start of Round 2 of the ongoing Competition with Saturday’s game featuring GDF vs Caribs and Sunday UG vs Hornets. All matches are being played at the National Park.
