A number of topical issues were craftily ventilated by students at the finals of the keenly contested Regional Impromptu Speech Competition for secondary schools in Berbice.
The event was held on Thursday at the St. Francis Community Developers Multipurpose Conference Hall in Port Mourant.
The activity was organised by the Region Six Department of Education in collaboration with St. Francis Community Developers (SFCD) and Metro as the main sponsors. It was coordinated by Simone Dainty, Literacy Advisor attached to the Department of Education.
In the end it was Chante Leacock of Berbice High School speaking on the topic the “Social Media” that took top honours ahead of six other contestants.
The competition which began a few weeks ago saw participation from a number of the schools in the region. There were the eliminations in the earlier rounds. The final was slated to be contested by nine contestants, however only seven participated.
Before the competition began the participants including a large turnout of students from neighbouring schools, were addressed by Regional Education Officer, Volika Jaikishun and Chief Executive Officer and founder of SFCD Alex Foster. Also addressing the forum was CEO of Metro Avia Lindie.
The finalists were Tasha Jailall and Jana Hendricks both of Skeldon Line Path Secondary; Simone Guyaram of Skeldon High School; Chante Leacock of Berbice High School; Makhaila Patterson and Aliya Cameron, of Corentyne Comprehensive Secondary; and the lone male Marlon Kadoo of Winifred Gaskin Secondary.
The finalists of Berbice Educational Institute and New Amsterdam Secondary were absent.
