Brazen bandits, early Thursday morning, raided an East Bank Demerara sawmill, and tied up the two security guards, before escaping with hundreds of thousands of dollars in truck parts.
During the two hours or so ordeal, the bandits also smoked cigarettes that they took from the security, before assuring them that they would be freed within a few hours when their colleagues turned up for work.
According to the Dax Kissoon, an official of the property, total losses may add up to over $2M with his family, the well-know Kissoon family, now offering a “lucrative” award for information that could lead to the recovery of the parts.
The case is indeed a strange one from the perspective that bandits traditionally go after cash.
However, in this particular case, the intentions were clear, Kissoon said.
The compound at Coverden, on the right bank of the Demerara River, is home to a sawmill and bond.
It seemed that the bandits were familiar with the operations of the facility, arriving at around 03:00hrs and leaving two hours later.
The bandits, not masked, held up the two guards, and bound them with duct tape.
One of the bandits reportedly took out a pack of cigarettes from one of the security guards and helped himself.
The bandits, armed with at least one gun, then took their time. They headed straight to a Bedford TM 6×6 model truck that is used to haul logs for the business.
They had come with a Canter truck. It was reversed into the compound.
According to Kissoon, the truck that was targeted was under repairs at the time. The bandits stripped the gear box, transfer box and drive shaft from the truck and loaded it onto the Canter.
It seemed clear that they knew what they were doing. The parts are said to be worth in excess of $2M.
The bandits, on leaving, even told the two bound guards to have a nice day, Kissoon said.
Kaieteur News understands that there has been an increase in the number of reports of raids on business facilities especially along the East Bank Demerara. It is believed that the bandits have been using the river to gain access, as well as to escape.
The matter is being investigated by Timehri Police Station.
