– mulls long-term sponsorship agreement
By Edison Jefford
Sunburst Juices, which is distributed by Continental Group of Companies, yesterday continued its partnership with table tennis phenom, three-time national ‘Junior Sportswoman of the Year’, Chelsea Edghill with a projected extensive sponsorship arrangement.
Sunburst Juices, which had first announced its intention to make Edghill the face of the product last year, has supported Edghill to compete this weekend at the Silver Bowl in Trinidad and Tobago where she is defending Under-21 and Singles Champion.
The support this weekend is the first of broad plan to sponsor Edghill in a series of competitions that will offer much-needed exposure to the top racquet-wielder leading up to the 2014 Youth Olympic Games,
Continental Group of Company’s Corporate Secretary, Percy Boyce (third right) hands over the sponsorship for this weekend to table tennis ace, Chelsea Edghill in the presence of: from left, Continental’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Khemraj Dhanraj, Edghill’s father, Godfrey Edghill, GTTA President, Godfrey Munroe and Continental’s Marketing Assistant, Indar Jaigobin.

“Since Chelsea is going to defend two titles this weekend, I said we cannot embarrass her… we hope to sit down with you people and go through the details with the Road to Nanjing where we will work out the package for deliverables,” Corporate Secretary of the Continental Group, Percy Boyce told the media and the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA).
Boyce made it clear that the GTTA and/or Edghill and Continental Group will “have to go into an agreement” since the package will be exponential. He said that the company will have to look at what they will be getting in return for the magnitude of support.
“In principle, we have taken a decision and all things will be considered to work out the details. I see no reason why we can’t have big posters of Chelsea as we see with Nicolette (Fernandes, the Squash player). It is a Herculean task, but we are up to it,” Boyce said.
Following last year’s announcement of Edghill’s arrangement with Sunburst Juices, the athlete’s image has already appeared alongside the product on Continental Group’s 2014 Calendar and on a branded refrigerator at the company’s Ruimveldt Headquarters.
President of the GTTA, Godfrey Munroe disclosed that Edghill has a packed schedule leading up to the Youth Olympics for which she has qualified; apart from this weekend’s Silver Bowl, she is expected to compete in the Dominican Republic this month end in a Latin American competition as well as a few other marquee tournaments before heading to China.
“It is not only about Chelsea going to the Olympics, but it is also ensuring that she competes and does so very well. This is definitely a step in the right direction and we know that there will be a lot of long term benefits,” Munroe told those present yesterday.
The GTTA President said that the bigger picture is ensuring Edghill gets the right support ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil; “this is a critical and pivotal intervention with this gesture and it will spill off to so many other positive things,” Munroe said.
He expressed his gratitude to the company for the support and committed the GTTA to ensuring that the Sunburst brand is properly represented during the association’s packed annual calendar of events. Edghill and Coach, Idi Lewis left this morning for Trinidad.
