Government has signed another component of its initial land deal with sister Caricom country Trinidad and Tobago. The deal is intended to advance the agreement between the two countries to develop an agricultural investment project which will reduce the importation of food in Trinidad and Tobago from outside of CARICOM.
During a teleconference this week between Minister of Agriculture Dr. Leslie Ramsammy and Trinidadian Minister Devant Maharaj the two countries signed the Memorandum of Understanding.
According to the Agriculture Ministry, the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), has already completed soil testing and has made the findings available to the Trinidad Government.
“With this step completed the Trinidad Government would proceed shortly to advertise for investors to tap into the opportunity to invest in Guyana, even as the joint Technical Team from the two countries determine what crops are suitable for Trinidad farmers to commence with,” the local Agriculture Ministry said.
It was noted that the team previously identified a list of crops in which Trinidad has a special interest. With the soil test completed, the choice of crops is now possible.
“Officials from Guyana and Trinidad have been meeting on a regular basis, to ensure that this MOU is advanced…The Trinidad and Tobago Government would now advance with this agreement now that the soil testing has been completed,” Minister Ramsammy said.
A possible area has also been identified for farmers to commence the necessary land preparation for cultivation.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which was signed between the Governments of Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago in September, grants the Twin Island access to lands in Guyana.
The agreement addresses several areas including programmes and activities, core areas of cooperation, monitoring and coordinating mechanism, mutual responsibility, commitments and rights and obligations.
A subsequent meeting is expected to be held between the two governments shortly on the way forward.
