Dear Editor,
Permit me space to share my opinion on the Topic title “Health and Safety is everyone’s business”. First, Health and Safety must be the business of every Guyanese. My fellow countrymen there is no doubt removing waste is the responsibility of the Mayor and City Councils and Town Councils, but bad disposal of waste is one of the many factors for our country being untidy and we are faced with many dangerous situations when it rains heavily. We as a people seem to have lost our sense of value for tidiness. Part politics and racism have caused many of us to forget the true meaning of being a Guyanese. There are many unchangeable things in life, let us change what we can and forget the rest.
I am a Lindener, and I’ve travelled all over Linden town and I must say, there are heaps of garbage everywhere and most of our school compounds are filled with food boxes, plastic bottles, plastic bags, juice containers and many other disposable items. There is no perfection in man, but homes are the first places to start teaching tidiness. Schools must re-establish prefects where there are none in order to bring about a change in students attitude towards their environment, also establish health and safety departments where none exist and have regular conversations with students and teachers as it relates to garbage disposal among other things.
Many years ago, it was said by a former USA President “It is not what your country could do for you, it is what you could do for your country”. Secondly, our Mechanics and sanitation workers seem to feel they must appear greasy and unkempt in public, even when they are not working, giving members of the public the right to feel it’s okay to look untidy. It is my opinion that every mechanic (shop) and repair establishment and the sanitation department of the Mayor and City Council and Town Councils must provide bathrooms and lockers for all staff members attached to the sanitation department for them to tidy themselves before going into transportation and public places. It is necessary to bring about changes in our and people’s lives and in Guyana as a whole. We boast frequently about the appearance of mechanics and sanitation workers in North America. Why don’t we bring a change to our situation? Let’s start now!
