MACORP signs third MoU to assist UG
The Machinery Corporation of Guyana Limited (MACORP) yesterday signed its third Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which would allow the company to assist the University of Guyana (UG).
The agreement, which was initiated in September 2009, seeks to mostly benefit the university’s Faculty of Technology.
During the MoU signing at the company’s Providence, East Bank Demerara location, it was explained that the entity is looking to provide continuous opportunities for further national development through enhanced tertiary education and training. The agreement will last for a period of two years, with the option of renewal.

MACORP is also looking to establish a professional workforce, as the company itself relies on its human resources.
With the renewal of the MoU, the Faculty of Technology would continue to receive $850,000 annually, with this amount being applied to sponsorship of final-year projects, sponsorship of research, and acquisition of capital items – a Laptop Computer, Printer, Projector and Projector Screen.
In addition, students will also be allowed to utilize MACORP’s services, including the company’s laboratory and other testing facilities.
According to the company’s Product Support Manager, Guillermo Escarraga, the renewal of the MoU is consistent with the company’s mission to become the undisputed leader in supplying sustainable integrated solutions to customers.
He explained that to accomplish this, the company relies on, and sees human talent as most important.
It is to this end that the entity has moved to invest in the development of a strong workforce.
“We need young engineers that can hit the ground running; that can deliver from day one,” he said, adding that the company has seen results from the four years that the MoU has been in place.
The official noted the company is enthusiastic about the continuous collaboration with the University.
“Our country requires a skillful workforce today more than ever,” Escarraga said. He also encouraged other private sector organizations to follow MACORP’s lead.
Meanwhile, UG’s Vice Chancellor Professor Jacob Opadeyi told the gathering of MACORP employees, UG officials and members of the media, that the university is thankful for the partnership with MACORP, especially given the fact that the institution was only able to school engineers, and not properly train them.
Opadeyi also challenged other industries to do the same, which he said will help to compete at the international level.
Also speaking at the event, Chief Executive Officer of MACORP, Jorge Medina, noted that apart from bringing the latest technology on the market, the company is also looking to enable and assist the Health and Education sectors. He stated that the company’s motto ‘Let’s build Guyana together,’ and the entity is prepared to work with other stakeholders in developing the country.
