Sometimes journalists are so busy reporting stories of robberies and other adverse news items that they become oblivious to the fact that they too are exposed to the vile aspects of society. This view was further exemplified yesterday morning when anchorman of ‘First Look’ (an early morning programme on HBTV Channel 9), Handel Duncan, was robbed at gunpoint of more than $400,000 in cash and valuables, while on his way to work.
Duncan said that he had just left his Block ‘E’ Sophia residence at around 06:25hrs yesterday. He said that he noticed a brown-complexioned man riding a bicycle just behind him. Duncan said that he paid the individual little mind, but shortly afterwards the man had snuck up behind him and ordered him to empty his pockets.
“At first I thought it was one of my friends playing a prank on me,” Duncan said.
He subsequently realized that it was no joke when, upon turning around, he noticed that the man was brandishing a revolver.
“He snatched my phone (BlackBerry Curve 9300) and then turned his attention to my haversack, demanding that I hand it over,” Duncan recounted.
The television anchorman said that he became confused and afraid and conformed to the bidding of the bandit who rode away after relieving him of his property. Duncan said that he then raised an alarm and several residents came to his assistance but by then the bandit had disappeared.
Duncan said that he had only recently finished paying his final installment on his Dell Laptop computer, which was in his haversack. He also said that he has lots of important files on the device which, if not recovered, would be a great inconvenience in relation to performing his journalistic and other duties.
Other items lost include; ATM Bank cards, ID card, cash, flash drives and his iPod charger, among others. Duncan is appealing to any member of the public with information that would help in the recovery of his property to report same to any police station. He has since lodged a report.
