DEAR EDITOR,
It is almost four years since the brutal slaying of young Sheema Mangar and I am still not sure if anyone has been charged in connection with this crime.
From the date it occurred, I have been following the developments regarding this horrific tragedy and it appears that the parents’ search for justice has been running into sky-high brick walls.
The last news report I read on this incident was last May. In that KN news item dated May 23, 2013, it was reported that the Ministry of Home Affairs sent a letter to Mangar’s parents, to state its disappointment with the investigation into Sheema’s death.
Why was this “disappointing missive” sent to Sheema’s parents? I do not know! However, I do believe that for starters Minister Rohee should have at least accepted responsibility for the lack of information and poor investigation into the gruesome murder of this promising young professional.
The fact that the crime was committed in public at a busy intersection in Georgetown, during afternoon rush hour and to date no arrest has been made, continues to be very troubling. Maybe the Minister of Home Affairs has a plausible explanation to this situation.
And what about the body/hair samples that were supposedly sent to the Barbados Forensic Lab, have the results returned to Guyana? What is really the situation with this case?
I am aware that Sheema Mangar’s slaying resembles so many other high daylight crimes which remain unsolved, and so the Home Affairs Ministry might have probably deemed the young lady’s slaying as simply an addition to the staggering statistics of unsolved murders.
I am hoping that Sheema’s parents will get closure. The state of crime and security in Guyana coupled with the Minister of Home Affairs’ lack of ability to manage his Ministry continues to be of major disservice to the Guyanese people. I pray that Sheema’s parents will continue to pursue the justice their child deserves.
