Stemming from a desperate attempt to obtain an All Terrain vehicle, (ATV) by means of a duty free concession, an alleged fraudster, was placed on a total of $200,000 bail after he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Leroy Vanderhyden, 31, who is said to be a miner from Broad Street, Charlestown, faced Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry to answer two counts of forgery. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.
According to the allegation, between April 12 and April 15 last year, Vanderhyden forged a declaration of gold statement purporting to show that it was issued to him by Mohamed‘s Enterprise.
The court heard that the man subsequently presented the phony document to an official of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, (GGMC) purporting to show that it was genuine and could be used for the purpose of procuring duty free concession for an ATV motorcycle.
However, subsequent investigations conducted by GGMC officials and the Ministry of Natural Resources proved that the slip, which Vanderhyden presented, had been forged.
The man was apprehended and arraigned. Vanderhyden was represented by Attorney Mortimer Coddett, who requested bail.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant did not oppose the application, but asked that the court grant Vanderhyden bail at a substantial amount.
The prosecutor also requested that the defendant’s bail be on condition that he reports to the Criminal Investigations Department, (CID) Headquarters at Eve Leary once weekly.
The Chief Magistrate granted the prosecutor’s request and released Vanderhyden on bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 21.
