By Zaheer Mohamed
Georgetown and East Coast registered victories when the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) U-15 50 overs Inter Zone tournament commenced yesterday.
At Demerara Cricket Club, Georgetown led by a century from Alphius Bookie, a half century from Kurt Lovell and a four wicket haul form Ashmead Nedd easily dispatched West Demerara by a mammoth 278 runs. Set 292 to win, West Demerara were skittled for a paltry 13 made up of only extras as no batsman managed to get off the mark.
Georgetown pacers Colin Barlow 3-3 and Junior Phillips 2-9 made early inroads into the visitors batting after which they never recovered. Left arm spinner Need then wrapped up their innings with four wickets without conceding a run off five deliveries.
Earlier, the home team won the toss and posted 291-5 off their allotted 50 overs. They were given a rousing start by Joshua Persaud and Kishan Bhola; the pair added 41 for the first wicket before Bhola was bowled by Daneshwar Kowlessar for seven. Persaud soon followed caught behind by Chukiram Outar off Ganesh Jailall for 35 (5×4) while Kowlessar removed Christopher Campbelle (03) leaving the score at 80-3.
Bookie, who was put down early in his innings, and Lovell then dominated the opposition with a fourth wicket stand of 163. The duo rotated the strike nicely and wasted little time in dispatching the bad balls. Lovell smashed four fours and two sixes before he was LBW to Retesh Samaroo for 61. Bookie who was not afraid to use his feet to the spinners and played some lovely shots on both sides of the wicket brought up his century with a single to mid on much to the delight to the small but admiring crowd; he departed for 109 with twelve fours and one six. Nedd and Riaz Ally were left unbeaten on 17 and 13 respectively. Kowlessar was the pick of the bowlers with 2-29 while Samaroo snared 2-58 and Jailall 1-49.
At the Georgetown Cricket Club, East Coast overcame East Bank by 19 runs. East Coast posted 175 all out in
49 overs after taking first strike.
Bhaskar Yadram stroked 47 (7×4) while Ramdeo Baldeo scored 40 (5×4) and Pradesh Balkishun 31 (3×4). Yadram and Basdeo featured in a third wicket stand of 60 after East Coast were reduced to 27-2. After Yadram was sent packing, Basdeo and Balkishun added a further 53 for the fourth wicket but following Basdeo’s dismissal, East Coast lost wickets at regular intervals with Bhojnarine Singh doing most of the damage bagging 5-22 from eight overs. He was backed up by Ricky Dass with 3-26 off six overs. East Bank threatened somewhat before they were bowled out for 156 in 41.2 overs in reply.
Daniel Scott and Sagar Hathiramani put together 39 for the third wicket after East Bank were in trouble at 18-2 before Scott went for nine. Hathiramani who scored 35 (2×4) found a useful partner in Dass (19) and the pair took the score to 109 with level headed batting. However left arm spinner Ramdeo Basdeo applied the brakes on the scoring as he grabbed 6-34 to give his team a hard fought victory. Rawle Douglas was the only other batsman that offered resistance with 13.
The competition continues today.
