As part of its efforts to raise funds for its developmental drive, Malteenoes Sports Club which had a record seven players in the 1987 National Under-19 team which toured Jamaica, will be hosting a Corporate 15-15 Cricket Tournament sponsored by Noble House Seafoods, Star Party Rental and Friends of Malteenoes on Monday March 17 at the Club ground commencing at 09.00hrs. Monday is a national holiday celebrating the Hindu festival of Phagwah.
This tournament which is being held to foster camaraderie and encourage physical activity among corporate Guyana, will see companies such as Wartsila Operations Guyana Inc, Qualfon Guyana, The Upper Level Barbers and The National Park BBC, which comprises a group of entrepreneurs and media officials who come together daily at the National Park for physical activity, competing for the Noble House Seafoods Trophy.
Each of these teams will be graced with the presence of some guest cricketers to bolster its ranks.
Among the notables are Colin Stuart and Kellon Carmaichael (Qualfon), Lennox Cush and Jermaine Neblette (Upper Level Barbers), Roderick Lovel and Paul Castello (Nat Park BBC) and Neil Barry, Sean Holder and Troy Lewis (Wartsila).
Take-away lunch will be on sale as the club continues to raise funds for its on-going rehabilitation works.
The Malteenoes Sports Club was founded in 1902 by a Barbadian tailor named Ferdinand Archer and has produced one West Indies Test player in fast bowler Colin Stuart.
However, the club which celebrates its 112th anniversary this year has two more Test players (John Trim and Clayton Lambert) although they were products of Berbice clubs -Port Mourant and Bermine respectively.
The pair, along with pacer Barrington Browne, who represented the West Indies in ODIs and left-arm-spinner Rex Collymore, who toured with the Test team without playing a Test match, all played for Malteenoes, while female West Indies player Indomattie Gordial also represented the Thomas Lands club in women’s cricket.
