The New York and local chapters of the East Ruimveldt Secondary School presented the learning institution with 60 pairs of wooden benches and desks. Each pair could accommodate two students.
According to the head teacher, Maureen Samuels, the school is grateful for the donation, since initially there was a shortage of 100 pairs of furniture for students. Though, unaware of the classes that would benefit from the furniture she is confident that the learning environment would be enhanced.
Past President of the Old Student Association Colin Canterbury and Secretary Leola Grosvenor were present at the handing over.
Canterbury related that the Association keeps regular contact with the school to ascertain the needs of students in the areas of sports and academics. The aim is to inculcate a healthy, balanced lifestyle of work and play in the students.
He hopes that the Association would be able to deliver the other 40 pairs of benches and desks to the school to eliminate the shortage.
However, this may take some time to materialize since the construction of the 60 pairs cost over $1M. Monies to make the vital donation were realised through fund raising activities by both the local and overseas chapters.
Another initiative the Association hopes to engage in is the construction of a cricket pitch to allow students to play even when it rains. Canterbury said that gear to play this popular Guyanese sport would also be provided.
Meanwhile, Brickdam Secondary School’s Old School Association (the local chapter) and the Brickdam Secondary Alumni Association (US chapter) also made donations to the school they once attended.

And, the local chapter donated text books to the school.
Ron Bishop, President of the local chapter presented the items to the school.
The mission statement of the Brickdam Secondary Alumni Association is to assist the faculty and students both current and future by providing the necessary tools to encourage success.
