…bids in for supervision and construction of High St. building
By Zena Henry
The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) is moving ahead with plans to use in excess of US$3M ($600M) to renovate the building at High and Princes Streets which will be the new home of the agency.
The GGMC is preparing to shift into its new headquarters at the former Radio Demerara compound on High Street and the controversy that had surrounded the price tag for repairs to the defective building that had since been erected, appears to have subsided.
Bids to repair that building have been received and officials say that work is expected to commence on correcting some massive defects to the building in the coming months.
With public advertisement from the GGMC for contractors to start work on the High Street building, the move is almost certain.
Management of the GGMC had initially expressed anger with Cabinet ordering the agency to spend more than $100M to buy the defective edifice which was originally slated for the Labour and Human Services Ministry. US$3M was added to the tab to make the building habitable for GGMC’s 300-plus staff.
Sources had stated that officials were even more upset because they had already spent millions of dollars on a new building in the Brickdam compound, which is now the head office of the Natural Resources Ministry.
Additional moves to ease the congestion issue at the GGMC had also been shot down by the Natural Resources Ministry. However, significant engineering defects will have to be repaired at the High Street location. Capacity capabilities in accommodating staff, machinery and visitors, remain a major concern for the agency.
