A woman, who was ‘mistakenly’ charged and remanded to prison seven days ago by a City Magistrate, on an armed robbery allegation, secured bail at the High Court yesterday.
Alana Taylor, 32, of Lot 212 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown was granted bail in the sum of $80,000 after an application was made by her Attorney, Mark Waldron, before Chief Justice Ian Chang.
The lawyer moved his application to the High Court after his client was denied bail at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on three separate occasions.
The mother of an 11-month-old was initially remanded to prison by Magistrate Judy Latchman after she appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, on Wednesday last, for her alleged involvement in a robbery, which took place on March 2 at Lime Street, Georgetown.
Taylor, along with 23-year old Peter Mc Kenzie of 298 Meadow Brook Gardens and 19-year old Anikie Rogers of 195 Meadow Brook Gardens, were accused of robbing Elizabeth Hendericks, a female miner, of one cellular phone, one gold ring, one handbag, one laptop and three BlackBerry chargers that together are valued at $341,000.
The trio was not permitted to plead to the charge, which remained indictable. At her initial court appearance, Taylor’s lawyer argued that investigators are fully aware that his client has no connection with neither of the accused and has fully cooperated with the police.
Police Prosecutor, Vishnu Hunt told the court that Taylor was “mistakenly” charged; that she knew the robbery victim and would be used as a witness. Hunte further noted that Taylor has been a friend of the virtual complainant for a number of years.
However, while the Prosecutor successfully objected to bail for the two male defendants citing the seriousness of the offence and the fact that a weapon was used in the commission of the crime, Magistrate Latchman had decided to remand all three accused to prison, pending the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
