Police are still appealing for help to identify the man whose headless body was found near the abandoned section of the Vreed-en-Hoop wharf last week Tuesday. They have not ruled out the possibility that he was murdered.
The body, with the skull nearby, was found between two trees close to the wharf. The hands and feet were also missing. The victim was wearing a pair of three-quarter pants and a white jersey.
Kaieteur News understands that a name, which police were unable to decipher, was tattooed on the dead man’s right arm. While they were unable to ascertain his ancestry, police estimate that he was in his late thirties or early forties. Initially, some persons who viewed the body had suggested that the victim might be an elderly man who was sometimes seen in the same area.
“We can’t rule out murder. What is puzzling is that the head was so badly damaged while the rest of the body was not,” a police source said. “A lot of things go on at the waterfront.”
Investigators hope that someone comes forward to identify the body before a post mortem is conducted, since the remains will then be buried.
The body is at the Ezekiel Funeral Home.
In late December 2013, the body of 39-year-old Rafeek Mohamed of Drysdale Street, Charlestown, was found at the Atlantic foreshore at Ruby Backdam, East Bank Essequibo. He had been shot in the face with a shotgun.
Although the man’s reputed wife said that he was a clothes vendor, police had received information that Mohamed was a member of a gang that was involved in robberies and burglaries. His murder remains unsolved.
