A 14-year-old schoolgirl who ingested a poisonous substance yesterday has alleged that she committed the act after enduring weeks of sexual harassment at the hands of a teacher at a prominent private school.
The teen, who resides in Georgetown, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) at around 17.30 hrs, after allegedly ingesting a rodenticide. Doctors are monitoring her condition in the Accident and Emergency Unit and a source said that her condition appears to be stable.
The accused teacher has categorically refuted the allegations.
Kaieteur News understands that the third-former began attending an East Coast Demerara private school last December.
In the presence of police and social workers at the GPHC, she identified by name a male teacher, whom she claimed has been making sexual advances to her. She claimed that her ‘sir’ has been picking on her in class because she has been rejecting his advances.
Owing to the harassment, the teen claimed that she has been reluctant to attend class, and did not attend school yesterday.
Relatives said that the girl’s mother went into her daughter’s bedroom at around 16.30 hrs and observed that the teen was completely covered herself with a sheet. The mother also observed a packet of ‘blue tablets’ on a nearby table. The teen then told her mother that she had ingested two of the pellets.
The woman then contacted her husband and the family took the teen to the GPHC.
Asked about the allegations, a former teacher told Kaieteur News that several female students had made similar complaints of sexual harassment against the accused teacher.
Contacted by phone last night, the accused teacher told Kaieteur News that he never made any sexual advances to the teen or any other female student. According to the teacher, the student would sometimes be late for classes and was also occasionally absent. He alleged that he would ask the teen to give reasons for her absence.
The teacher said that he has not been contacted by police or any school official.
Repeated attempts to reach senior officials were futile.
