The body of 21-year-old Clive Johnson, who fell into the river at Omai, Region Seven, on Sunday, was discovered floating in the area’s murky water around 09:00hrs yesterday.
Johnson of 19 Ramp Road, River View, Ruimveldt, fell into the river around 17:00hrs after he reportedly tried to climb onto a ‘draga.’ His body was discovered floating in the river, near the landing, by his colleagues. A ‘draga’ is a large piece of Brazilian mining equipment.
The dead man’s friend, Anthony Lewis, who was at Omai when the incident occurred, said that other workers noticed the body floating in the water and called the police.
The body was pulled out of the water and brought to the city, where a post mortem examination is to be performed today.
Johnson’s mother, Janice Evans, had told this newspaper that she was informed that her son had climbed onto a ‘draga’ to reach for something when his foot slipped and he fell into the water. Evans was further informed that another miner plunged into the rough waters to rescue Johnson, but his efforts were futile.
“Clive use to work out here with a man name ‘Peter’. A month ago he (Johnson) said that he will go into the interior to work with this man on his draga and he was suppose to come out on Monday,” the mother explained.
According to Evans, her son called her on Sunday around 15:00hrs and told her that he will be home around 17:00hrs the following day (Monday).
“Like two hours after he called, a shop man called me and asked me if I hear
what happen with my son and I said no. Then he tell me that my son fell overboard. Right away I called the boss and then he told me that Clive fell overboard,” the mother had said.
