Twenty four schools comprising male and female footballers will don gears in fierce competition when the Guyana Sports Development Foundation Inc. (GDSF) in collaboration with Scotiabank and the Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL) stages the 4th Annual Scotiabank/Pepsi Schools Football Academy at the Ministry of Education Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue Thomas Lands, Saturday March 15 next.
Consequently, the media was summoned to a press conference at the match venue yesterday morning where the organizers unveiled plans and projections for the success of the competition.
Those in attendance included Secretary of the GDSF, Victor Wright, Physical Education Officer of the Ministry of Education, Allison Rawlins, representatives of the sponsors, Larry Wills (DDL) and Jennifer Cipriani (Scotia Bank) and members of the organizing committee, Brenda Harmon and Lawrence ‘Sparrow’ Griffith.
Ms. Cipriani reaffirmed Scotiabank’s commitment to the development of the sport with particular interest in the youths and female players while Mr. Wills said that his company was pleased with the way the organizers have conducted the programme and was delighted to continue rendering support.
Ms. Rawlins expressed gratitude to the sponsors and organizers for supporting the initiative. She pointed out that the tournament is the only one that incorporates women and urged other organizations to emulate the gesture. “I wish you every success as you forge ahead,” she concluded.
General Secretary of the Guyana Football Coaches Association (GFCA), Sampson Gilbert, pointed out the importance of the coach in the mix. He said that his entity is committed to the tactical and competitive applications of those officials that perform the task of preparing the footballers.
He said that his entity has been working assiduously in this area to foster improvement among the players. Veteran football administrator, Lawrence ‘Sparrow’ Griffith is tasked with the organization of matches and released the fixtures.
Meanwhile, when activities get underway on Saturday, the twelve competing teams from Georgetown as well as the coaches will participate in a march past shortly before the first game between East Ruimveldt Secondary and Tutorial High School will be contested.
Officials will also equip students with copies of the laws of the game which will also benefit those writing the CXC/CSEC examination. Further, one of three students, Ronaldo Dover, Shaka Lewis and Dominique Babb, will be selected to pursue studies in the United States of America. According to the organizers, the opportunity is open to the student that excels in academics as well as football activities.
