Three sent home amidst probe over absent ATC officer

Three persons have been relieved of duties as the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) continues to probe the circumstances under which an Air Traffic Control officer vacated his post just before a Caribbean Airlines aircraft was about to land at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport last Saturday.
A statement from the GCAA said that the three persons have been relieved of duties to facilitate an investigation; the results of which will be available to Public Works and Hydraulics Minister Robeson Benn before weekend.
GCAA head, Zulphicar Mohamed, had confirmed to this newspaper that a probe would have been launched into the matter as reports surfaced about the officer abandoning his post after informing that he would be unable to work through the night.
It was understood that the officer had to be relieved of his duty at midnight, but when this did not happen, the ATC officer,– who was reportedly unwell– indicated that he was leaving the tower and left the building.
Reports said that it was a scramble to get a replacement to the tower to communicate with the CAL flight that came in from Trinidad and Tobago. Allegations are that the CAL flight landed a few minutes late and had to circle the airport once before touchdown.
Mohamed had told Kaieteur News that his understanding of the issue was that the ATC officer was in contact with his seniors; they were informed that the officer would be leaving his post and an immediate replacement was found.
The GCAA release noted however that “the inbound Caribbean Airlines flight to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) was in continuous contact and in the control of the Area Control Centre which provided a replacement Air Traffic Controller to ensure the safe landing of the aircraft.”
