…deported, charged with wife’s 2010 murder
A man who allegedly murdered his wife back in March 2010 and then fled the country to neighbouring Suriname has been charged.
The man, Devanand Albert, called ‘Brother’ 50, was wanted for the March 4, 2010 murder of his wife 43-year-old Esther Albert, called ‘Kamla’, of Bhanjara Sawmill Dam, Lot One Grant 1803 Crabwood Creek, Corentyne.
The woman’s body was found in the home she shared with the man and their children.
He had subsequently disappeared after the crime was committed.
He was nabbed in Suriname and deported to Guyana on Saturday.
He appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh on Monday at the Whim Magistrate’s Court charged with the crime. He was not required to plea.
According to Prosecutor Corporal Althea Solomon, the man murdered his wife, Esther Albert, at their home. The matter has since been transferred to the Springlands Magistrate’s Court for continuation on April 4.
According to information back then the couple was imbibing in alcoholic beverages the day before .They returned home and an argument ensued. The husband allegedly dealt her some lashes with a pointer broom and gave her a few slaps.
The body bore two wounds on the head, one on the left eye and another on the forehead.
One of the woman’s young sons had stated back then that his father was responsible for his mother’s demise. Only the two were at home.
He had stated then that when returned home around 18:30 hours, his mother was lying on a ground. Her head and face were bloodied and her mouth was also swollen and bloodied. Her eyes were bloodshot and she wasn’t talking.
She was lying on the ground, groaning all the time. His father was cursing all the time, he said.
He was called early the next day and sent by his father to his grandmother place to collect Limacol or methylated spirit. That is when he informed his grandmother what occurred.
The grandmother arrived at the house and found that the woman was dead. Relatives had indicated that Esther Albert was seen playing Phagwah and imbibing a copious amount of alcohol the day before her body was discovered.
Esther Albert was a mother of five. Police are continuing their probe.
A post mortem conducted on the body concluded that she died from manual strangulation.
