The 21-year-old construction worker who was shot in the upper left shoulder by a lone gunman on a bicycle last Thursday in the vicinity of Conversation Tree, East Coast Demerara (ECD), remains in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Inshan Ali Ramlakhan of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, was shot and robbed while he was on his way to work. The bullet which struck him damaged his lung and spine. He is currently hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit.
Doctors have reportedly told Ramlakhan’s relatives that his condition is listed as “critical.” So far, there has been no improvement in his condition and according to his mother, Bibi Ramlakhan, “all I have to do now is pray.”
In a press release, police had said that Ramlakhan was walking along the Railway Embankment, Blygezight, when he was attacked by a man armed with a handgun.
The release further added that the 21-year-old was held up and shot to his left shoulder by the perpetrator who took away three cell phones and $8,000 before escaping on a bicycle.
The injured man’s mother had explained that her son, who does construction work with one of his uncles, was supposed to go on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway on the day he was shot.
“He does normally stop off at Conversation Tree every morning to reach up his uncle and then the two of them does go to work together, but Thursday he left early because he had to go far,” Bibi Ali Ramlakhan said.
The woman said that she was informed that a few minutes after her son exited the minibus he was confronted by a lone gunman who demanded that he drop his haversack.
“I hear when he dropped his bag with his working clothes and lunch, the man shoot he and pick up the bag and ride away,” the mother lamented.
The injured man was rushed to the hospital by his uncle, who had found him lying in a pool of blood on the roadway.
Police say investigations into the robbery/shooting are ongoing.
